Pitching in Baseball's Early Days  - Details

Although the standard major league baseball pitch these days is something that looks quite consistent between various different pitchers, baseball pitching was actually tossed underhand in the early days of baseball, just like someone might toss a horseshoe. There was no overhand pitching in baseball until the 1880s. The term "pitching" resulted from The Knickerbocker Rules of baseball that were formalized by Alexander Cartwright in the middle of the nineteenth century. Most baseball historians consider those rules to be the first such rules created for the game of baseball although the rules have changed in various ways since that initial creation.
